Two Transport for Wales (TFW) trains have collided near Llanbrynmair, Powys earlier this evening resulting in multiple casualties and one fatality.

Dyfed-Powys Police, British Transport Police and Wales Ambulance Service are attending the scene along with the coastguard helicopter.

The two trains involved are the 18.31 Transport for Wales service from Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth and the 19.09 Transport for Wales service from Machynlleth to Shrewsbury.

In a joint statement, TFW and Network Rail said: “Emergency services are responding to an incident near Llanbrynmair in Powys, Mid Wales, involving two trains – the 18.31 Transport for Wales service from Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth and the 19.09 Transport for Wales service from Machynlleth to Shrewsbury.

“The line is closed as they carry out their work. Our main priority is the safety of our passengers and colleagues and we are doing all we can to support the emergency services as they respond to the incident. We would encourage passengers to plan ahead and check journeys before travelling via National Rail Enquiries.”

A spokesperson for the British Transport Police said: “Officers were called to the line near Llanbrynmair at 7.29pm on Monday, October 21, to reports of a low-speed train collision involving two trains. Paramedics, fire and rescue, and Dyfed-Powys Police are all in attendance and the incident is ongoing.”

A later statement confirmed that a man had died in the crash and around 15 people have been taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

An investigation will now be launched by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) to determine the cause of the collision.
